Step-by-Step Guide to Measuring Arm Length for Violin Size

  1. Tools Needed:

    • A tape measure (preferably flexible and in inches or centimeters).

  2. Position the Arm:

    • Extend the left arm straight out to the side, keeping it parallel to the ground.

    • The arm should not be bent at the elbow.

  3. Measure from Neck to Palm:

    • Place the starting point of the tape measure at the base of the neck (where the neck meets the shoulder).

    • Measure along the extended arm to the middle of the palm (not the fingertips).

  4. Note the Measurement:

    • Record the measurement in inches or centimeters.

Additional Tips

  • Test for Comfort: After selecting the size, have the player hold the violin in playing position. The scroll should be within reach of the palm or fingers without fully straightening the arm.

  • Consult a Teacher: If unsure, consult a violin teacher or a music shop for confirmation. Contact Ponticello Music Studio for a consultation here:

  • Trial Fit: Many music shops allow you to try different sizes to find the best fit.

A well-fitted violin will make it easier for the player to practice proper posture and technique!
